Cape Range
Remote but full of life...
Explore two National Parks at your doorstep
There are only a few places on earth where you can explore two National Parks side by side: Ningaloo Marine Park and Cape Range National Park. Running along the western side of the North West Cape, Cape Range National Park, covers an area of about 510 square kilometres with a spectacular landscape of canyons, stunning gorges, pristine white beaches and rugged limestone ranges. There are over 700 caves in the ranges, which were well used by Aboriginal communities. The caves offered shelter close to the abundant food resources of the reef, the area is of huge archaeological importance.
The remains of a meal of shellfish from around 30,000 years ago, found on the North West Cape, are Australia's oldest evidence of a seafood dinner. But the discovery that most excited archaeologist was a 32,000-year-old shell necklace found in a Mandu Mandu rock shelter in 1990. This necklace, now held by the Western Australian Museum, is one of the oldest known examples of human ornamentation found anywhere in the world.
There are short bush walks to Mandu Mandu Gorge and Yardie Creek in the park's far south.
The Cape Range National Park is easily accessible by car. Please note that there is no public transport in Exmouth or to the National Park.
